In a small little village -right in the middle of the island of Naxos, art potter, Katharina Bolesch runs a great little workshop and gallery. The mighty olive is the backbone of Katharina's pottery, but she also includes associated motifs such as lizards, octopuses, bees and frogs, as well as that other great Naxian symbol, the vine.
DF: Each piece of work is entirely handmade. Worth checking out and making a mental note next time you're on the island.

An Athens exhibition appropriately titled "Rip!" is exploring paper's potential use as a fabric. "Few people are aware that clothes from paper exist, it takes you to another dimension, another planet", says Vassilis Zidianakis, a fashion scholar and curator of the Athens-based Atopos cultural organization.
These dresses appeared in America in 1966 for the first time, to promote the products of a large paper manufacturing company and soon passed into the hands of designers and fashion houses, creating a new fashion fully expressive of the sixties Pop culture.
The non profit ATOPOS has over one hundred authentic paper dresses of the time in its collections, having managed to collect and preserve the largest number of these fragile garments existing today in a museum collection.

Hennes & Mauritz, otherwise known as H&M, is the Swedish fashion chain that boasts over 1,300 outlets worldwide. With its bargain priced stylish collections of chic womens, mens, and childrens clothing and accessories, the company has become a household name to millions. H&M has now set its eyes on the untapped Greek market and is planning on opening its first store in Athens sometime in Spring of 2007. The location is still under raps, however, we assume it will be somewhere on Ermou St. and will compete with the widely popular clothing chain out of Spain, Zara.
H&M has successfully used celebrity designers like Stella McCartney, Karl Lagerfeld, and Madonna to accent its offerings and create buzz for the company.
DF: No doubt the Greek market holds loads of potential for H&M....for we know there are millions of Greeks out there thirsty for new styles...

In a unique partnership with world renowned shoe and accessory giant Nine West (a Jones Apparel brand), designer Sophia Kokosalaki has created an exclusive collection for the company. This Greek-born darling is one of London's fastest rising stars in fashion. The designer regularly presents her collections in Paris as well as in Greece. Known for her edgy sculptural designs and her superior craftsmanship, Sophia has been featured on DF before and shows much promise of becoming a household name in fashion.
The limited edition collection she has designed for Nine West is currently available only in 20 select stores. The stunning styles feature great leather shoes and boots as well as wool capes and military style coats. The accessories Sophia has designed for Nine West are equally as exciting. Beautiful leather lace-up gloves and handbags with detailed hardware are just some of the standouts we saw. The Kokosalaki pieces are a little pricier than the regular items in the Nine West line, but so far have been a big hit. Be sure and check out the collection before it's gone.
DF: Can you say Greek designer breaking into the mainstream? Nice work Sophia...
