Final stretch of Egnatia Highway inaugurated

After more than a decade of construction and digging in northern Greee, prime minister Kostas Karamanlis inaugurated the final main stretch of the Egnatia Highway spanning 670 KM across northern Greece last week.  This huge highway project, the largest of its kind in Greece's history; now connects the Greek port of Igoumenitsa all the way to the Turkish border.

Some interesting facts about the scope of the project and its reach:

- Passes thru 12 major towns and cities of Macedonia, Thrace and Epirus.

- Connects 4 of northern Greece's ports

- Connects to 6 of the largest airports in northern Greece

- Will be accessible 36% of the country's population

- Serves 33 % of the country's annual gross national product

The company behind the highway has a great website about info about the project. Check it out here to see it.

Have any of our readers been on any portion of the new highway?

CannaLover... ...I have driven the stretch from Grevena to Kavala as well, I passed through the tunnels that connect Veroia with Kozani (in Makedonia) in October 2008. It was simply AMAZING! what use to be a one hour winding car ride up and down the mountain (Kastania), was a 10 minute drive THROUGH the mountain!! It's so much safer (no more playing chicken with a 'ndalika' or a 'pullman') and it is such an engineering marvel! The only part that saddens me about that new stretch is that we no longer pass right by Panagia Soumela so we have to make a conscious effort to veer off the Egnatia in order to visit our most revered Monastery. But I digress….the Egnatia is amazing.
