
After more than a decade of construction and digging in northern Greee, prime minister Kostas Karamanlis inaugurated the final main stretch of the Egnatia Highway spanning 670 KM across northern Greece last week. This huge highway project, the largest of its kind in Greece's history; now connects the Greek port of Igoumenitsa all the way to the Turkish border.
Some interesting facts about the scope of the project and its reach:
- Passes thru 12 major towns and cities of Macedonia, Thrace and Epirus.
- Connects 4 of northern Greece's ports
- Connects to 6 of the largest airports in northern Greece
- Will be accessible 36% of the country's population
- Serves 33 % of the country's annual gross national product
