It's not easy...

Did you know?

- Children born in Greece to immigrant parents -when they turn 18 - get classified as migrants and are asked to prove their right to live in the country.

-The number of kids growing up or born in Greece approaches 200,000.

- Greece requires 10 years of legal residence (longest in Europe) as a formal requirement for a citizenship application.

- The application fee is 1,500 euros, the most expensive in Europe.

- Failed applicants are not given any explanation for their rejection.

argikon... ...Reasonable and realistic requirements should be established, and if those requirements are met, they should be according full rights as citizens. A main precondition however should be that they fully assimilate into every aspect Greek language and culture, and thus their children become "Greeks" in the true sense. Otherwise we will see the creation of ghettos and an upsurge in racism like there is France between the Arabs and the French.

tomstaph... ...It's not fair play. It's a shame. Immigrants are contributing immensely to Greek society and should not be treated as strangers. In many cases, its the only country these "foreigners" have ever known.

dariotisa... ...Thank you DF crew for bringing up this issue. I agree with jkots- shame on Greece for denying people their civil rights- and I say this as a Greek who grew up in America and whose family was given opportunities they would not have had in Greece. Now I live in Greece and am appalled at how easy it has been for people here to forget the hard times of war and poverty that cased Greek families to move to the Xenitia.

I am sick and tired of the xenophobia plaguing this country. When I hear foreigners remarking on how hospitable and friendly Greeks are, I think, what a joke! Otan tous symfernei, and they know you are only passing through, then Greeks go out of their way to accomodate you.

What happened to our filoxenia and compassion for other who are less fortunate? Shouldn't we treat others as we would like to be treated (and have been in the past) in the same situation?

jkots... ...Fair play? I think it is totally unfair (e.g. born in Greece and then 18 years later classified as a migrant?!!! preposterous) and not in the spirit of the European Union. I also find it galling that Greece and its diaspora have benefited from fair-minded immigration programs in places like the USA, Canada and Australia, but in turn have imposed standards in the Greece that they would have considered unacceptable for their own people abroad!

andreason... ...I say, fair play to Greece! Stick to their guns and not allow the inflation of foreigners to overwhelm the country. Unlike the UK.......
