Paros, a beautiful island located in the middle of the Cyclades and currently home to around 13,000 people, may be the first island in the Cycladic group to get a town plan. Town plan for an island? Sounds silly being that Paros was one of the poorest islands in the Cyclades in the 1970s. However preservationists, locals and the mayor of Paros town are worried that a fast growing population (which by 2021 is expected to reach nearly 73,000 with locals and vacationers during the summer season), will deplete the island of its character, and merge villages together.
Two companies from Athens have come up with several ideas of how to curb construction, and/or limit it completely in some cases. The suggestions include:
- Designating land use for specific purposes
- Restricting any buildings outside the official town plan
- Protecting the limited farm land and Nature sites
- Limiting House and Plot sizes
- Avoid building pergulas which connect properties
DF: Do you think more islands should set up 'town plans' or strict construction codes?
