Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos this past weekend inaugurated a new centre for illegal immigrants, with a capacity of 285 people, on the island of Samos.
Pavlopoulos hailed the importance of the project, due to the particularity of Samos as a target for illegal immigrants from the broader region. (The island has been criticized for the way its other detention center has treated illegals.)
DF: Nearly 18,000 illegal immigrants have been detained thus far in 2007 trying to cross into Greece, with nearly 150 detained just off Samos this past weekend.
Great story below on the current situation in the Aegean. Locals report that up to 60 boats a night are now crossing the two mile stretch between Turkey and Samos full of economic and political immigrants.
