DF had a chance to preview the movie 300 yesterday amongst an audience of several hundred Greeks in a special preview for the Greek Americans of Chicago. Our quick two words on the film...QUITE AWESOME.
While there are instances of over exaggerations in certain elements of the film, thanks to Hollywood, and some historical inaccuracies (who knew exactly how each successive wave of Persians attacked the Greeks), you could not help but be wowed by the amazing graphics and cinemotography.
The recreation of Sparta, the first time ancient Sparta has been brought to the big screen like this, and the resonating proud spirit of the Spartan people that resonated throughout the film gives us yet another reason to be proud of our long and colorful heritage.
We do not want to spoil the movie but be sure to check it out. In Sparta, Greece; the home of King Leonidas, previews were held as well, selling out at many theaters.

A Turkish court yesterday ordered the popular video sharing website You Tube banned from viewing. Site access was blocked after videos allegedly insulted Turks and thefounder of modern
Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk turned up on the site.In
Turkey, these acts are considered illegal andeven punishable by prison.
Turk Telekom,
Turkey's largest telecommunications provider has alreadystarted enforcing the ban. Turkish visitors will find a message when visitingthe site stating, "Access to this site has been blocked by a court decision."
DF: Not since Greece decided to make
video gaming illegal back in 2002 have we seen such backwards thinking... Leave it to the Turks to make this ridiculous ruling.

You might have noticed DF had some bumps yesterday. Up and down all day. Our web host had some power issues but we think everything has been resolved. Apologies for any inconvenience!

A few weeks back, we walked along the perimeter of the former World Trade Center Site in New York City, with some friends-- trying to locate the parcel of land where St. Nicholas once sat. After not finding any markings or plaques, we assumed that there was nothing to be seen and started walking towards the Metro.
Right as we were about to make a turn onto one of the side streets, we heard two older gentlemen summoning people to come and eat at their establishment. The gentlemen had heavy accents, and upon turning to see where the noise was coming from, we noticed a string of Greek flags lining the front of the establishment.
Once everyones Greekness was established, it was like we had known one another for years. We informed them of our mission to find the church had failed, and they told us nothing was left. "The new one will be twice as big,'' one of the gentlemen told us.
Their cafe, Essex World Cafe, was so severly damaged, that they remain shut for three years. The restaurant even served as a Medical Station in the hours after the disaster. Now the Essex has a line of customers at its counters again, and eerily located, it is the closest eating establishment to the former World Trade Center site.
Make sure to stop by and pay them a visit if you are visiting the World Trade Center site in NY.

The stars took a little bit longer to align this month (cold weather, bombings and all...) Fear not- Angeliki got them all sorted and in their place.
Fellow Aquarians, we feel your pain. Enjoy.

As we enter the final days of 2006, let's take a look back at some of the images our community has shared with us. We couldn't enter all the pictures, (the slideshow would last for hours) but we included the ones that capture various moments of our diaspora life around the world. Good, bad, ugly -we'll take it all. Our heritage makes our life rich. Enjoy, and we'll see you next year!

It's been quite a year for us at DF. While we haven't exactly setthe Greek world on fire, we weren't standing still either. 2006 saw acontinious addition of loyal readers--and for that we're extremelygrateful. Last year was filled with all sorts of personal twists andturns and we're thankful for all the new friendships and opportunitiesthat came our way. We don't care what anyone says, a little luck helps.
Whileit's good to take a quick breath once in a while, that's really not ourstyle. We're working hard on the future -so stay tuned, good thingscome to those who wait.
Kαλά Χριστούγεννα! See you all next Tuesday.

Angeliki closes out 2006 with her unique brand of astrological greekisms. Guaranteed this is the only site in the Greek universe where the words "figgy puddy" and "Αγιος Βασιλης" appear on the same page. Enjoy.
