TURKISH AND GREEK MUSIC INTERTWINED

Professors at Turkish universities have carried out research into the similarities between Turkish and Greek music.

The Turkish and the Greeks, who have lived next to each other for many centuries, have preserved many of the similarities between their two societies, from musical style to instruments and lyrics, say the ethnomusicologists. Their research took two years and was carried out in seven Greek cities, including Athens.

The study included 4,057 Turkish songs, of which 127 were found to have the same melodies as ancient Greek tunes.

Three-thousand words of Turkish-origin still survive in the Greek Language; last year Greek poet Yianni Boziki compiled a dictionary of Greek's Turkish words.

DF:  On a similar note we wonder how many Turkish words are of Greek origin?

SONGWRITER DOWN...SINGER NEEDED

As Eurovision draws closer and closer, Greece has officially announced the song writer for this years competition.  Michalis Hatzigiannis, no strager to those who follow Greek music, has said that he will be writing the song that Greece will represent in Eurovision 2007.  Asked if he would also perform, Michalis said that although he had been offered both the songwriter and performer position for the competition, he vowed only to do the writing.  (He feared that his aspirations to make it big in the US and UK might be hurt by a Eurovision performance.) The song will be written in English, according to Hatzigiannis.

ERT has announced that the public will know by the end of January who the representative will be for Greece in this years competition.

DF: What do you think? Should the song have some Greek in it, or should it be all in English?

GREEK COMPOSER KARAINDROU PREFORMS IN TURKEY WITH A MESSAGE OF PEACE

Well-known Greek composer and soundtrack writer Eleni Karaindrou's arrival in Turkey this past week is of a different sort of reconciliatory tone than that of the Pope, as she joined musical forces with Turkish colleagues on Sunday night in a concert organized by Istanbul's Encounter of North-South Musicians for Peace.

This is Karaindrou's debut performance in Turkey as well as her first collaboration with Turkish musicians, and the artist hopes to create a different kind of peace dialogue during her visit.

Karaindrou performed in the closing event of the annual Pera Fest, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

DF: Karaindrou is best known for her music for the films by Theo Angelopoulos.

TAMTA TO REPRESENT GREECE IN HELSINKI?

Although not yet confirmed, it appears that Tamta (a Georgian singer who was in the Super Idol competition in Greece two years ago) will be representing Greece in Eurovision 2007 in Helsinki.

The problem is that Tamta is not a Greek citizen.  ERT is still determining if she can still qualify for the Euro Vision Contest.  According to oikotimes.com, Greeks might not be too keen on this decision being that the country has a plathora of great Greek singers, and that also there was bickering on who the representative would be.

DF: Any of our readers familiar with Tamta?

THIS IS GREEK RADIO, RIGHT?

In the last 30 years, there have been hundreds of licenses approved to start up radio stations throughout the country.  This can not be more noticeable than in the nomo of Attiki, where there are dozens upon dozens of radio stations (in several languages now also be it), catering to the growing population.

Ironically though, out of the top 25 radio stations in the Attiki area, only 7 have Greek names.  The rest either have English names, or are in Greek-english.

The list of the English named radio stations are:  Sfera, Antenna, Love Radio, Village,Orange, Red, Athens Dee Jay, John Greek, Kiss, Galaxy, Oasis, Nitro, Best, Soho, Rock, Flash, Radio Gold, EPA 2.

The Greek named channels include.  Skai,  Ruqmo, Lamyh, Melwdia, Spor FM,  EPA Spor,  Diesh,

DF: Have any of our readers also noticed the large number of English songs played throughout Greece?
