Dionysis... ...Israeli commandoes stormed peace flotilla and killed several Turkish peacekeepers. The numbers are not confirmed yet. Turkish rioters tried to storm Israeli embassy and ambassador has been recalled. Read below:

A pity we are not in any position to exploit any potential conflicts in the future to our benefit.

Dionysis... ...Why do we care about what really happens to Israel or Turkey? How do WE as GREEKS stand to benefit or lose from this latest ruckus? Turkey will win more friends in the Arab-Islamic world in accordance with their Neo-Ottoman policy, who they will further nudge to recognise the pseudo-state in Cyprus. The Turkish PM will also use this to strengthen his electoratal support before upcoming elections to be held next year. Israel will probably start scrambling for friends in the neighbourhood. The Greeks and the Kurds are sort of obvious choices. Also, expect to see more negative press of Turks and their genocidal history in the American press.

Dionysis... ...A Cypriot MEP Eleni Theocharous, a previous participant in the Free Gaza convoys, that she did not take part this time because she was aware that the campaign had been hijacked by Turkish Islamists and infiltrated by MIT (Turkish secret service) agents out to advance Turkey's interests. She said MIT was behind attempts to use the Turkish-occupied port of Famagusta as a staging post for the flotilla in an effort to upgrade the status of the occupation regime in northern Cyprus and to draw parallels between the Israeli blockade of Gaza and the 'isolation' and 'blockade' which Turkey claims the Turkish Cypriots are enduring.
On a related matter, well done to DF for referencing a Greek language source. Although there are more informative and analytic voices than the City of Athens.

Katerina... ...I'm Greek and pro-Israel. After all, Christ is from there. Shouldn't we as Christians be on their side? It only makes sense to me this way.

Niko... ...Katerina, John and Odeseas, I would hope that your critical faculties would push you beyond the idea of supporting Israel in this specific case simply because two thousand years ago Jesus was born into a Jewish family or because you generally have an aversion towards Islamic culture. The issue of whether Israel was justified in using lethal force in international waters is a function of the specific facts of the case and applicable international law. Imagine a few Saudi's commenting on the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and saying well we should support Turkey (even though they violated international law and killed innocent civilians) because they are Muslims and were acting in aggression towards infidels.

Dionysis... ...Katerina, John and Odeseas, should we only support the Greek national interest regardless? By the way, do you know about the large Israeli investments in the occupied territories in Cyprus?
Further, what has Christ go to do with modern international relations/geopolitics? Also, Christ was not from Israel. No such country existed back then. Legally, he was from the Roman Empire. I am afraid with your way of thinking, us Greeks are going to sink into further irrelevance.

Thanos... ...I agree with Niko and Dionysis. Just because they are Musims doesn't mean that we can behave outside the law in our relations with them. We must demand morality and humanity in our treatment of everyone. In any event, Israel is no friend of the Greeks in Cyprus or in the Holy Land.

Dionysis... ...Katerina, please wake up and stop swallowing American-Jewish propaganda. The first and foremost national interest we should be interested in is the Greek national interest. We are on the side of the GREEKS. Sometimes that means we support Israel, sometimes it does not. As Thanos says, the Israelis have been no friends in Cyprus. However, that does not preclude them from being friends in the future if their interests align with ours. This Manichaen framework that I am afraid you adhere to has no relevance to Greek affairs.

Geroge... ...I agree 100% with Dionysis, besides Greece stands to gain more being an Ally with Israel, Industry , Security , Technology, Lobbying know how etc. What have we gotten from the Arabs? Beside hijacked planes in the 80's. Also generally speaking some of the Greeks who support the Palestinian cause. Are from the usual Syriza and KKE circles, because its the trendy socialist cause of the day. Of course you would not see any of these clowns protesting in Syntgama on the rights of Greeks (example, Imvros, Tenedos, Cyprus, Northern Epirus etc). Oh know those causes would be Nationalistic, therefore not "chic" enough for the Syriza and KKE supporters. That is my personal opinion. Not saying we should not have friends in the Arab/Muslim world, but the return of investment has been zilch with regards to our so called friendship.

El Greco... ...As long as Israel keeps making blunders and maintains the Muslim world focus of anger upon them, then they will keep the Muslims occupied and not able to redirect their energies toward other areas and exert hegemonic power over the Christian sheep.
Long winded, but you get the message.

Smurfette... ...Why can't Greece just be allies with both sides? There is some bogus criteria people are basing their opinions on. This hate is infectious and we need to stop teaching/learning it!

El Greco... ...if it hasn't been stated before, Greece would have a hard time convincing hoi polloi that being overly friendly with the US is a good thing. The sting of US-Turkey vs Cyprus-Greece will not go away so easily. The US, in its paranoic and ill-advised way, chose the path of manipulator in order to offset the threat posed by the Red tide of USSR, and to bolster relations with countries that appear friendly toward Israel (Turkey played that card to the fullest, but were really opportunists and don't like Israel [as evidenced by Turkey's latest barrage of vitriol aimed at Israel] - kudos to them for their skill in playing the game).

Dionysis... ...I cannot say how important it is to watch and listen to the video link above. The program goes into depth regarding Turkish FM, Ahmet Davutoglu's Neo-Ottoman policy. The commentators and analysts are as good as anything, and often better, than anyone will listen to in the West including the United States. Also, Panagiotis Kondylis quoted.

Dionysis... ...George, Panagiotis Ifestos, Professor of International Relations and Strategic Studies, has an extended section on his website regarding this book and Neo-Ottomanism. See on the left hand side.

Hopefully, other Greeks who scoff at Neo-Ottomanism as some sort of wild conspiracy take notice.
